Livadeia

Livadeia (Greek: Λιβαδειά, romanized: Livadeiá, pronounced [livaˈðea̯]) is a town in central Greece. It is the capital of the Boeotia regional unit. Situated on the Boeotian plain, Livadeia is known for its historical association with the ancient oracle of Trophonius and its location near the medieval castle.

History:

Livadeia boasts a rich history dating back to ancient times. The most prominent feature of its ancient past is the Oracle of Trophonius, a chthonic oracle complex dedicated to the hero Trophonius, son of Apollo. Pilgrims would undergo a complex ritual before descending into a cave to seek oracular advice. The site was important in ancient Greece and continued to attract visitors well into the Roman period.

In the medieval period, Livadeia became a significant town under Byzantine rule. A castle was built overlooking the town, providing strategic control of the region. The town later fell under Ottoman control for several centuries.

Following the Greek War of Independence, Livadeia became part of the newly independent Kingdom of Greece.

Geography:

Livadeia is situated on the banks of the Erkyna river. The river springs from a gorge near the town center and historically powered numerous watermills. The surrounding landscape consists of fertile plains and hills. Mount Parnassus is located to the north of Livadeia.
