Multicart

A multicart is a type of ROM cartridge designed to hold multiple complete software programs, typically video games, accessible from a single piece of physical media. These cartridges are most commonly associated with classic video game consoles such as the Atari 2600, Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), and Sega Genesis, where the cost of individual cartridges was significant and the technology to store multiple games in a single unit became feasible.

Multicarts work by utilizing a memory management system (often a menu or list) that allows the user to select which game they wish to play. Once selected, the appropriate game's data is loaded into the system's memory, and the game can be played as if it were on a standalone cartridge.

The creation and distribution of multicarts can be a complex legal issue. While some multicarts contain legitimately licensed games, many are composed of unlicensed or pirated software. Homebrew developers also often release multicarts containing their own games and demos. The legality of a specific multicart depends on the copyright status of the included games and the distribution methods employed.

Multicarts offer several advantages, including convenience (having multiple games in one cartridge), cost savings (potentially cheaper than buying individual cartridges), and space savings (reducing the number of cartridges required). They are particularly popular among collectors and retro gaming enthusiasts. However, potential drawbacks can include lower build quality compared to official cartridges, compatibility issues with certain consoles or peripherals, and the ethical considerations surrounding the use of potentially unlicensed software.
