Isopora

Isopora is a genus of stony corals belonging to the family Acroporidae. These corals are primarily found in the western Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea. Isopora species are characterized by their thick, branching structures and relatively small axial corallites.

Characteristics: Isopora colonies typically form dense thickets or clusters. The branches are generally cylindrical and blunt-tipped. The surface of the coral is covered with numerous radial corallites.

Species: Notable species within the genus include Isopora palifera and Isopora cuneata. Isopora palifera is a common reef-building coral. Isopora cuneata, formerly considered an Acropora species, is another important species within this genus.

Distribution and Habitat: Isopora species are found predominantly in shallow reef environments within the Caribbean and the western Atlantic. They are often found in areas with strong currents and high wave energy.

Conservation Status: Like many coral species, Isopora faces threats from climate change, ocean acidification, disease, and habitat destruction. Some species are listed under conservation programs due to declining populations.
