Matore
Matore, in the Bionicle fictional universe, refers to an inhabitant of the island of Mata Nui prior to the coming of the Toa Mata. The Matore are biomechanoid beings, smaller and physically weaker than the Toa, and form the primary citizenry and labor force of the island's various villages (koro).
The Matore are divided into six distinct tribes, each associated with one of the six primary elemental powers: Fire (Ta-Matoran), Water (Ga-Matoran), Earth (Onu-Matoran), Air (Po-Matoran), Ice (Ko-Matoran), and Stone (Le-Matoran). Each tribe has unique cultural characteristics, occupations, and a corresponding village on the island. For example, the Ta-Matoran reside in Ta-Koro, located near a volcano, and are generally involved in forging and crafting.
Matoran can evolve into Toa if they possess the inherent potential and are exposed to Toa Stones, which imbue them with the power to control their element. This transformation is a significant event in the Bionicle narrative. Matoran can also be transformed into Turaga, wise elders who guide and protect the Matoran.
The Matore are deeply connected to the Great Spirit Mata Nui, believing their purpose is to awaken him from his slumber. Their faith and dedication are central to the plot and themes of the Bionicle storyline.
