Li Xilie

Li Xilie (李希烈, died 786), also known as Li Cheng (李成) before 784, was a Tang Dynasty military general (Jiedushi) who controlled the Huaixi Circuit (淮西, headquartered in present-day Zhumadian, Henan). He initially served under Li Zhongchen, but gained prominence after Li Zhongchen's death and through his participation in campaigns against rebellious generals.

Initially loyal to the Tang Dynasty, Li Xilie rebelled in 784, declaring himself the Emperor of Chu (楚) and establishing a separate regime. His rebellion, along with those of other warlords, contributed significantly to the weakening of the Tang central government during the late 8th century. He claimed legitimacy through alleged descent from the Zhou Dynasty.

His forces engaged in extensive battles with Tang armies, with varying degrees of success. He captured several important cities and threatened the Tang capital, Chang'an. However, his momentum was eventually stalled due to internal conflicts, defections, and the resilient resistance of Tang loyalists.

Li Xilie was assassinated in 786 by his own subordinates, who poisoned him. His death did not immediately end the rebellion, which was continued by his successors until it was finally suppressed by the Tang Dynasty years later. His rebellion is considered a significant event in the decline of the Tang Dynasty's authority and the rise of powerful regional warlords.
