Eberron

Eberron is a campaign setting for the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) fantasy role-playing game. It was originally created by Keith Baker as the winning entry in Wizards of the Coast's 2002 Fantasy Setting Search. Eberron blends elements of high fantasy with pulp adventure, film noir, and steampunk influences.

Key Characteristics:

  • Post-War Era: The setting is defined by the aftermath of the Last War, a century-long conflict that reshaped the continent of Khorvaire. Tensions remain high, and various factions vie for power.
  • Dragonmarks: Inherited, magical sigils that grant specific powers and abilities. These marks are tied to specific bloodlines and families, known as Dragonmarked Houses, which wield significant economic and political influence.
  • Magic as Industry: Magic is not simply a mystical force, but also a practical technology. It is harnessed and utilized in everyday life, powering transportation, communication, and other essential services.
  • Moral Ambiguity: Eberron is not a world of clear-cut good and evil. Characters often face complex moral dilemmas, and motivations are rarely purely altruistic or malicious.
  • Ancient Mysteries: The world is filled with ancient ruins and long-lost civilizations, such as the Dhakaani goblins, the giants of Xen'drik, and the enigmatic Draconic Prophecy. These remnants hint at a rich and often dangerous past.
  • Varied Cultures and Regions: Khorvaire, the primary continent, is home to diverse cultures and environments, ranging from the industrial nation of Breland to the untamed wilderness of the Demon Wastes.
  • The Draconic Prophecy: A complex and multifaceted prophecy believed to be written on the very fabric of reality by the dragons. Events in Eberron are often interpreted as manifestations of this prophecy.
  • The Mournland: A blighted wasteland that was once the nation of Cyre, destroyed by a mysterious cataclysm during the Last War. The Mournland is a source of danger and intrigue, filled with warped creatures and lingering magical effects.

Themes:

Eberron explores themes of recovery, rebuilding, the consequences of war, the misuse of power, the intersection of magic and technology, and the struggle between tradition and progress. It encourages players to grapple with moral ambiguities and to consider the long-term impact of their choices.

Official Source Material:

Eberron has been supported by numerous sourcebooks and adventures published by Wizards of the Coast. The most prominent include the original Eberron Campaign Setting (3.5 edition), Eberron: Rising from the Last War (5th edition), and Eberron: Rising from the Last War which was followed by Wayfinder's Guide to Eberron which included some player options.
