Lutz jump

The Lutz jump is an edge jump in figure skating. It is one of the six most common jumps performed in singles and pairs skating and is typically the second most difficult, after the Axel jump. It is characterized by taking off from the back outside edge of the skater's opposite foot from their dominant hand (e.g., the right foot for a right-handed skater) and landing on the back outside edge of the dominant foot.

The Lutz is often considered technically challenging because of the counter-rotation nature of the takeoff; the skater must check their rotation during the approach and maintain a strong edge to avoid a "flutz," a jump where the takeoff edge is flattened or changes to the inside edge (becoming a flip jump). A clear outside edge takeoff is a key element in judging the correctness of a Lutz jump.
