Bootham

Bootham is a district and street in the city of York, England. Historically, it refers to the area immediately outside the northern gate of the city, also named Bootham Bar, which is one of the four main gatehouses in the city walls.

Bootham street itself stretches northwards from Bootham Bar towards the suburb of Clifton. It is a predominantly residential area with a mix of houses, flats, and student accommodation. It also contains a number of businesses, including shops, restaurants, and professional services.

Bootham is also known for being the location of Bootham School, a well-regarded independent Quaker boarding school. The school's history is closely linked to the development of the Bootham area.

The name "Bootham" is thought to derive from the Old English words "bothum" or "bothum", meaning "at the booths" or "booths". This likely refers to temporary market stalls or shelters that were set up outside the city walls in the past.
