Puffing Billy (locomotive)

Puffing Billy is one of four preserved early Victorian Railways narrow gauge steam locomotives in Victoria, Australia. It is historically significant as one of the earliest examples of its kind, built in 1900 at the Newport Railway Workshops. Along with its sister engine, "Belgrave", Puffing Billy was designed for use on the 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) narrow gauge railways in the state, specifically for lines running through hilly and forested areas where standard gauge lines were impractical.

The locomotive’s design incorporated features suited to navigating steep gradients and tight curves, characteristics of the railways it served. It initially operated on the Upper Ferntree Gully to Gembrook line, carrying passengers and goods. Later, it also served on the Moe to Walhalla line and the Colac to Crowes line.

Following the closure of several narrow gauge lines in the mid-20th century, Puffing Billy was preserved and became a key attraction on the preserved railway line that now bears its name, the Puffing Billy Railway. It has become a major tourist destination, offering heritage railway experiences through the Dandenong Ranges. Puffing Billy is now synonymous with the entire heritage railway operation, even though the railway features other locomotives. The name "Puffing Billy" is evocative of the sounds and atmosphere associated with steam locomotives, contributing to its popularity.
