Osmocom
Osmocom, short for Open Source Mobile Communications, is a collection of free software and open-source software projects related to mobile communications infrastructure. The aim of Osmocom is to provide a complete replacement for proprietary and closed-source GSM, DECT, TETRA, and other mobile communication technologies.
The projects within Osmocom cover a wide range of aspects, including the base station subsystem (BTS), network switching subsystem (NSS), and operations and maintenance center (OMC). This enables individuals and organizations to build and operate their own mobile networks, offering greater control, transparency, and customizability compared to relying solely on commercial solutions.
Key goals of Osmocom include fostering innovation, providing educational resources, and promoting interoperability within the telecommunications industry. By making the underlying software and protocols publicly available, Osmocom empowers researchers, hobbyists, and network operators to experiment with new technologies, analyze existing networks, and contribute to the evolution of mobile communications standards. The project prioritizes adherence to open standards and encourages community participation. It is used in both research contexts and for niche network deployments.
