Zaxxon
Zaxxon is an isometric shooter arcade game developed and released by Sega in 1982. It is notable for being one of the first arcade games to use a pseudo-3D isometric perspective, giving the illusion of depth on a two-dimensional screen.
The game's objective is to pilot a spacecraft through a heavily fortified space fortress, destroying enemy targets such as turrets, missiles, and other enemy ships. The player must also avoid obstacles like walls and force fields. Fuel management is a key element of the gameplay; the spacecraft constantly consumes fuel, which can be replenished by destroying fuel drums scattered throughout the levels. Running out of fuel results in the game ending.
Zaxxon is divided into distinct levels, each featuring a series of challenges and culminating in a boss battle against a large, armored robot. The game's difficulty increases as the player progresses through the levels.
The game's name, Zaxxon, is believed to be a portmanteau of "Axis" and "Saxon," chosen to evoke a futuristic and militaristic feel.
Zaxxon was commercially successful and spawned several sequels and ports for various home consoles and computers.
