Plastiki
Plastiki was a 60-foot (18-meter) catamaran built primarily from approximately 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles. The vessel was conceived by British adventurer David de Rothschild to raise awareness about ocean plastic pollution and demonstrate the potential for recycling and repurposing waste materials.
The Plastiki's construction utilized a unique bonding agent called Seriouse Environmental Technology Epoxy Resin (SERETEC), a recyclable adhesive, in addition to the plastic bottles which provided buoyancy. Its structure also incorporated recycled PET plastic sheets and other sustainable materials.
The Plastiki embarked on a voyage from San Francisco, California, to Sydney, Australia, in March 2010, arriving in July 2010 after a journey of over 8,000 nautical miles. The voyage highlighted the impacts of plastic waste on marine environments and promoted solutions for reducing and managing plastic pollution.
Following the successful voyage, the Plastiki has become a symbol for sustainable innovation and has been exhibited at various events and museums. Its legacy continues to inspire efforts to combat plastic pollution and promote circular economy principles.
