Mamoudzou
Mamoudzou is the capital city of Mayotte, a French overseas department and region in the Indian Ocean. Located on Grande-Terre (the main island), Mamoudzou is the most populous commune of Mayotte. It was established as the capital in 1977, replacing Dzaoudzi, which is situated on Petite-Terre.
The city has experienced rapid population growth in recent decades, driven by migration from other parts of Mayotte and beyond. This growth has led to significant urban development and challenges related to infrastructure and services.
Mamoudzou serves as the administrative and commercial center of Mayotte. Government offices, businesses, and the main port are located within the city. While lacking the historical depth of some other Indian Ocean settlements, Mamoudzou reflects Mayotte's unique blend of French and Comorian cultures. The local economy is primarily based on services, administration, and some small-scale agriculture.
