Peter Monau

Peter Monau (1521 - 1571) was a German humanist, physician, scholar, and bibliophile. Born in Breslau (Wrocław), Silesia, he served as the personal physician to several notable figures, including the Silesian Duke Henry XI of Liegnitz.

Monau is best remembered for his extensive library, which contained a significant collection of classical, humanist, and medical texts. His library became a central point for intellectual exchange and scholarly activity in Silesia. After his death, the collection was dispersed and integrated into various libraries throughout the region. He was a proponent of education and played a crucial role in promoting humanist learning in Silesia during the Renaissance period. He is considered an important figure in the intellectual history of the region.
