Yaw-Yan

Yaw-Yan, also known as Sayaw ng Kamatayan (Dance of Death), is a Filipino martial art developed by Napoleon "Nap" Fernandez in the 1970s. It is a striking-based art that emphasizes powerful kicking techniques, punches, knees, elbows, and takedowns.

Unlike some other Filipino martial arts that heavily incorporate weaponry, Yaw-Yan focuses primarily on empty-hand combat. It is characterized by its aggressive, dynamic, and direct approach to fighting. It draws inspiration from various martial arts traditions, including those of Southeast Asia, and integrates them into a unique system.

Key features of Yaw-Yan include:

  • Powerful Kicking: Yaw-Yan is renowned for its strong and diverse kicking arsenal. Techniques are often aimed at vital points on the opponent's body.

  • Direct Striking: The striking techniques are designed for speed and efficiency, aiming to quickly disable or incapacitate an opponent.

  • Takedowns and Sweeps: While primarily a striking art, Yaw-Yan also incorporates takedowns and sweeps to bring the fight to the ground or to disrupt an opponent's balance.

  • Emphasis on Conditioning: Training in Yaw-Yan involves rigorous physical conditioning to develop strength, speed, agility, and endurance.

The art is practiced both for self-defense and as a competitive sport. Several Yaw-Yan practitioners have competed in mixed martial arts (MMA) and other combat sports. Yaw-Yan continues to be taught and practiced in the Philippines and in various locations around the world.
