Rožaje

Rožaje is a town and municipality in northeastern Montenegro. It is located near the source of the Ibar River, and close to the border with Serbia.

Geography: Rožaje is situated in the Sandžak region, a historical and geographical area divided between Serbia and Montenegro. The landscape is characterized by mountainous terrain and forests.

History: The area has a rich history, with evidence of Illyrian and Roman presence. Rožaje was officially founded in the 16th century. It was historically part of the Ottoman Empire before becoming part of Montenegro. During Ottoman rule, it was known as Rožaj.

Demographics: The population of Rožaje is predominantly Bosniak. Other significant ethnic groups include Montenegrins, Serbs and Albanians.

Economy: The local economy is based on agriculture, forestry, and small-scale trade. Tourism is developing, capitalizing on the natural beauty of the region.

Culture: Rožaje has a distinct cultural identity influenced by its history and diverse ethnic makeup. Islamic traditions are prominent within the Bosniak community.
