Wolfgang Schumann (1887–1964)
Wolfgang Schumann (born February 12, 1887, in Dresden; died November 28, 1964, in Freiberg) was a German mineralogist and petrologist. He is best known for his work on the geology and mineralogy of Saxony, particularly the Freiberg district.
Schumann studied at the Bergakademie Freiberg (Freiberg University of Mining and Technology), where he later became a professor. His research focused on the genesis of ore deposits, the metamorphism of rocks, and the mineralogy of various geological formations. He published extensively on these topics, contributing significantly to the understanding of the region's geological history.
His key contributions include detailed mapping of geological structures, descriptions of new mineral occurrences, and analyses of the processes involved in ore formation. He also played an important role in the training of future generations of geologists and mineralogists at the Bergakademie Freiberg. His work continues to be relevant for geological research and mining activities in Saxony.
