William Lucas (Michigan politician)

William Lucas (born September 13, 1928, died May 10, 2015) was an American politician and jurist from Michigan. He was the first African American to be elected county executive in the state, serving as the Wayne County Executive from 1967 to 1982.

Lucas began his career in law enforcement, serving as a special agent for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) from 1955 to 1958. He then transitioned to law, becoming a Wayne County Assistant Prosecutor.

In 1967, Lucas was elected as the Wayne County Sheriff, a position he held until being elected County Executive later the same year. As County Executive, he oversaw a significant period of growth and change in Wayne County. His administration focused on issues such as economic development, infrastructure improvements, and social services.

In 1982, Lucas unsuccessfully ran for Governor of Michigan as a Republican. Following his defeat, he served as the Wayne County Circuit Court Judge. He was also a partner at the law firm of Dickinson Wright.

Throughout his career, Lucas was involved in numerous civic and community organizations. He was considered a prominent figure in Michigan politics and a trailblazer for African Americans in the state.
