Shamsul Alam (economist)

Shamsul Alam is a Bangladeshi economist. He served as the State Minister for Planning of Bangladesh from 2009 to 2024. Prior to his role as State Minister, he was a member of the General Economics Division (GED) of the Bangladesh Planning Commission for over a decade, holding the rank of a Senior Secretary.

Alam is known for his contributions to development economics and planning in Bangladesh. He has been involved in the formulation and implementation of various national development plans and policies. His research interests include poverty reduction, sustainable development, and macroeconomic issues specific to Bangladesh.

He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. He has authored numerous publications in national and international journals on economic development and policy. He is a regular commentator on economic issues in Bangladeshi media.
