William J. Campbell (general)

William J. Campbell (born circa 1954) is a retired United States Air Force lieutenant general. He served as the Director of the Air National Guard from 2014 to 2018.

Prior to becoming Director, Air National Guard, General Campbell served in a variety of command and staff positions throughout his career, including commander of the 182nd Airlift Wing, Illinois Air National Guard, and Deputy Commander, First Air Force, Air Forces Northern, Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida.

Campbell's military career included significant experience in airlift operations. As Director of the Air National Guard, he was responsible for formulating, developing, and coordinating all policies, plans, and programs affecting more than 105,000 Air National Guard airmen and civilians in 90 wings located in 50 states, three territories, and the District of Columbia.

He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice from Illinois State University and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Studies from the Air War College. His awards and decorations include the Air Force Distinguished Service Medal, Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, and Air Force Commendation Medal.
