Vladimir Vasiliev (dancer)

Vladimir Viktorovich Vasiliev (born April 18, 1940) is a Soviet and Russian ballet dancer, choreographer, director, and actor. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest male dancers of the 20th century.

Early Life and Training:

Vasiliev was born in Moscow. He began his ballet training at the Bolshoi Ballet School in 1949, where he studied under Michael Lavrovsky. His extraordinary talent was evident early on, and he quickly distinguished himself as a promising dancer.

Career:

Vasiliev joined the Bolshoi Ballet in 1958 and rapidly rose to the rank of principal dancer. He was known for his exceptional technique, dramatic power, and charismatic stage presence. His athleticism, soaring leaps, and elegant partnering skills made him a sensation.

Throughout his career at the Bolshoi, Vasiliev danced leading roles in virtually all the major classical ballets, including Giselle, Don Quixote, Swan Lake, The Sleeping Beauty, and Spartacus. He also originated roles in ballets choreographed specifically for him, such as Yuri Grigorovich's Ivan the Terrible and Romeo and Juliet. His partnership with Ekaterina Maximova, his wife, was legendary, and they were celebrated for their artistic rapport and breathtaking performances.

Choreography and Directing:

In addition to his career as a dancer, Vasiliev began choreographing and directing ballets. He created new versions of classical ballets and also choreographed original works. He served as artistic director of the Bolshoi Ballet from 1995 to 2000. His choreographic works include productions for leading ballet companies worldwide.
