Vatica rassak

Vatica rassak is a species of tree in the family Dipterocarpaceae. It is native to Southeast Asia, found primarily in Peninsular Malaysia, Borneo (Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Kalimantan), and Sumatra.

Vatica rassak is typically a medium-sized to large tree, reaching heights of up to 40 meters. The bark is generally smooth and greyish-brown, becoming fissured with age. The leaves are simple, alternate, and oblong-lanceolate in shape. Flowers are small and yellowish-white, arranged in panicles. The fruit is a nut surrounded by persistent sepals.

The timber of Vatica rassak is a valuable resource, often marketed under the trade name "Resak." It is a moderately heavy and durable hardwood used in construction, furniture making, and boat building.

The conservation status of Vatica rassak is currently assessed as Least Concern by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). While the species is widespread, it is still vulnerable to habitat loss due to deforestation and logging activities across its range. Sustainable forest management practices are crucial to ensuring the long-term survival of Vatica rassak.
