Vangiones

The Vangiones were a Germanic tribe dwelling in the area around present-day Worms, Germany, in the Roman period. They are believed to have originated in the region of the Upper Rhine and Main rivers.

The Vangiones were closely associated with other tribes of the region, including the Triboci and Nemetes. They appear in historical records primarily in connection with Roman military campaigns and settlements along the Rhine frontier. Julius Caesar mentions them briefly in his Commentarii de Bello Gallico, indicating their involvement in conflicts against Roman expansion.

Under Roman rule, the Vangiones were integrated into the Roman administrative system. The city of Worms, then known as Borbetomagus, became their tribal capital and a significant Roman settlement. They provided auxiliary troops to the Roman army, contributing to the defense of the Rhine border against other Germanic tribes.

Archaeological evidence from the Worms area reveals a degree of Romanization among the Vangiones, with the adoption of Roman building styles, material culture, and religious practices. However, they also maintained aspects of their Germanic identity.

The Vangiones eventually disappear from historical records as a distinct tribal entity during the period of the Migration Period. Their territory was likely absorbed into the Frankish kingdom.
