Cross Mountain (Colorado)
Cross Mountain is a prominent peak located in Moffat County, in northwestern Colorado. It rises dramatically from the surrounding landscape, reaching an elevation of approximately 8,255 feet (2,516 meters). The mountain is characterized by its distinctive cross-shaped rock formation on its northern face, which gives the mountain its name.
The geological formation of Cross Mountain is primarily sedimentary, consisting of layers of sandstone, shale, and limestone deposited over millions of years. The erosive action of wind and water has sculpted the unique cross feature over time, making it a recognizable landmark.
Cross Mountain lies within the boundaries of the Dinosaur National Monument. The area supports a diverse range of flora and fauna, including coniferous forests, sagebrush steppe, and various species of mammals, birds, and reptiles.
The Cross Mountain area has a history of ranching and resource extraction. While Dinosaur National Monument protects a significant portion of the immediate area, surrounding lands are used for livestock grazing and energy development.
