Zygonyx
Zygonyx is a genus of dragonfly belonging to the family Libellulidae. These dragonflies are found in Africa, Asia, and Australia.
Description
Zygonyx dragonflies are typically medium to large in size, possessing striking metallic coloration, often with dark brown or black markings. They are characterized by their strong flight and preference for fast-flowing water habitats. A defining characteristic of the genus is the presence of a distinctly constricted basal half of the hindwing, which is narrower than the apical half.
Habitat and Distribution
Species of Zygonyx are commonly found near rivers, streams, and waterfalls with rocky substrates. Their distribution spans across various regions including Africa, Southeast Asia, Australia and surrounding islands. They require clean and fast-flowing water for both larval development and adult hunting.
Behavior
Adult Zygonyx dragonflies are skilled fliers, frequently seen patrolling stretches of water in search of prey. They are predators, feeding on other flying insects which they capture in flight. Males are often territorial, aggressively defending their chosen perches from other males.
Classification
Zygonyx is classified within the Libellulidae family, a large and diverse group of dragonflies. The classification within the genus may vary as taxonomic revisions occur.
