Khuman
The Khuman are a Meitei clan (sagei) of Manipur, India. They are one of the seven original clans that formed the Meitei civilization. Historically, the Khuman clan held significant political and military power, particularly in the early history of Manipur. Their territory was located primarily in the southern part of the Imphal Valley. The clan's influence waxed and waned over time, often in competition with other powerful Meitei clans like the Ningthouja (later the ruling clan).
The Khuman contributed significantly to the cultural and social fabric of Manipur. They are associated with certain traditional rituals, customs, and artistic forms. While the Ningthouja dynasty eventually established dominance, the Khuman clan retained an important position within Meitei society. Even today, descendants of the Khuman clan identify with their heritage and maintain various traditions associated with their lineage. The Khuman also feature prominently in Meitei folklore and historical accounts.
