Uus Eesti
Uus Eesti (meaning "New Estonia" in Estonian) was a significant political newspaper in Estonia during the interwar period. It served as the official mouthpiece and main publication of the Isamaaliit (Fatherland League), the ruling political party of Konstantin Päts' authoritarian regime after the 1934 coup d'état.
The newspaper was established in 1935, replacing the earlier Isamaaliit publication, Tallinna Teataja. Uus Eesti played a crucial role in disseminating the government's ideology, promoting national unity, and justifying the political changes implemented by Päts and his allies. It presented a highly curated view of events, often suppressing dissenting opinions and glorifying the government's actions.
Uus Eesti became one of the largest and most influential newspapers in Estonia, benefiting from government support and widespread distribution. Its content covered a range of topics, including political news, cultural events, economic developments, and international affairs, all presented from the perspective of the ruling regime.
The newspaper ceased publication in 1940 following the Soviet occupation of Estonia. Its editors and contributors faced repression, and the publication was replaced by Soviet propaganda outlets.
