Gerrit van Dijk (mathematician)

Gerrit van Dijk (born 1939) is a Dutch mathematician known for his work in harmonic analysis, representation theory, and related areas. He received his PhD from Utrecht University in 1969 under the supervision of Tonny Albert Springer.

Van Dijk's research focuses primarily on the representation theory of real reductive groups, particularly the construction and analysis of representations on spaces of functions and distributions. He has made significant contributions to the understanding of invariant differential operators on symmetric spaces and the Paley-Wiener theorem for these spaces.

He has held positions at Leiden University, where he is currently Emeritus Professor. He has also been a visiting professor at various institutions worldwide. Van Dijk has authored and co-authored numerous research articles and books in his field, influencing generations of mathematicians working in representation theory and harmonic analysis. His work is characterized by its depth and rigor, and its impact on the field continues to be felt.
