USS Maloy

USS Maloy (DE-791) was a Buckley-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy, named in honor of Ensign Joseph P. Maloy, Jr., who was killed in action during the Battle of Guadalcanal.

Maloy was launched on December 12, 1943, by the Charleston Navy Yard, Charleston, South Carolina; sponsored by Mrs. J. P. Maloy, mother of Ensign Maloy; and commissioned on March 14, 1944, Lieutenant Commander L. W. Dean in command.

During World War II, Maloy served primarily in the Pacific Theater. She performed escort duties, protecting convoys and participating in anti-submarine patrols. She saw action in areas including the Solomon Islands and the Philippines. Maloy participated in the Battle of Leyte Gulf in October 1944, screening escort carriers.

Following the war, Maloy continued to serve in the U.S. Navy for a period, before being decommissioned and placed in reserve. She was eventually struck from the Naval Vessel Register and sold for scrap. While no longer in existence, USS Maloy earned battle stars for her World War II service.
