USS Eagle (1812)
The USS Eagle was a schooner in the United States Navy during the War of 1812. Constructed at Vergennes, Vermont, in 1814 under the supervision of Master Commandant Joseph Smith, she was designed by naval architect Adam Brown. Eagle was part of Commodore Thomas Macdonough's Lake Champlain fleet and played a crucial role in the Battle of Plattsburgh on September 11, 1814.
Originally armed with eight 18-pounder carronades and eight 32-pounder carronades, Eagle engaged the British warship HMS Confiance early in the battle. She sustained heavy damage during the initial exchange of fire, being forced to withdraw from the front line to make repairs. Despite the damage, Eagle continued to contribute to the American victory.
Following the Battle of Plattsburgh, Eagle remained in service on Lake Champlain until she was laid up at Whitehall, New York, in 1815. She was later sold in 1825. Her participation in the Battle of Plattsburgh helped secure American control of Lake Champlain and contributed significantly to the outcome of the War of 1812.
