Keyauwee
The Keyauwee were a Native American tribe who lived in the Piedmont region of present-day North Carolina during the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Historical records regarding the Keyauwee are sparse, and much of what is known about them comes from the accounts of early European explorers and traders.
Historically, the Keyauwee were associated with the Saura (Cheraw) tribe, and some scholars believe they may have been a subgroup or closely allied with them. They spoke a Siouan language, like the Saura.
In the early 18th century, increasing European settlement and related conflicts, including the Yamasee War (1715-1717), significantly impacted the Keyauwee. They moved south, eventually merging with other Siouan-speaking tribes such as the Catawba. By the mid-18th century, the Keyauwee had lost their distinct tribal identity and were absorbed into larger tribal groups. Their name largely disappeared from historical records.
