USS Dorchester (APB-46)

The USS Dorchester (APB-46) was a Benewah-class barracks ship that served in the United States Navy during World War II and the Vietnam War. Originally laid down as a Landing Craft Infantry (Large), LCI(L)-1079, she was reclassified as a barracks ship and designated APB-46 on 23 August 1944.

As a Benewah-class vessel, the Dorchester provided berthing, messing, and recreational facilities for ship and boat crews, and other personnel. She was equipped with workshops and other support facilities to assist in the maintenance and repair of smaller vessels. These ships were particularly valuable in forward areas where shore-based facilities were limited or unavailable.

The USS Dorchester (APB-46) earned several battle stars for her service during the Vietnam War. Following her service in Vietnam, she was eventually decommissioned and disposed of.
