Thomas Curtis (lord mayor)

Thomas Curtis (1740-1822) was a British banker and politician who served as Lord Mayor of London. He was born in Islington, London, and entered the banking profession. He became a partner in the firm of Curtis & Robarts, later known as Robarts, Curtis & Co.

Curtis held several public offices in the City of London prior to his mayoralty. He was an Alderman for the Ward of Bread Street, and served as Sheriff of London in 1787-1788.

In 1795, Thomas Curtis was elected Lord Mayor of London. His term in office coincided with a period of significant political and social unrest, including anxieties stemming from the French Revolution and domestic radical movements. He was a staunch supporter of the government and took a firm line against what he perceived as sedition.

Beyond his role as Lord Mayor, Curtis continued his involvement in banking and public life. He was a Director of the Bank of England for many years, and served as its Deputy Governor and Governor.

He was a prominent figure in the City of London, known for his financial acumen and his commitment to maintaining order and stability. He died in 1822.
