Ghost light (theatre)

A ghost light is a single light, often an exposed incandescent or LED bulb, left burning on the stage of a theatre when the theatre is unoccupied and otherwise dark. It is typically placed center stage on a stand.

The purpose of the ghost light is twofold, combining practical safety measures with theatrical superstition.

Safety: The primary, practical function of the ghost light is to prevent accidents. Theatres, with their complex sets, traps, and drops, can be hazardous places, especially in the dark. The ghost light provides a minimal level of illumination, allowing stagehands, security personnel, or others who may enter the theatre after hours to navigate the space and avoid tripping or falling. It serves as a visual marker for the edge of the stage, helping to prevent accidental falls into the orchestra pit.

Superstition: A secondary reason for the ghost light's existence stems from theatrical superstition. One belief is that the light keeps away ghosts that are said to inhabit theatres. By providing a constant, albeit small, source of light, the ghost light allows these spirits to perform and entertain themselves, preventing them from causing mischief or interfering with future productions. Another superstitious explanation suggests the light appeases the ghosts of actors and theatre personnel who have passed away, ensuring their continued presence and good will within the theatre.
