Bridge (City of London ward)
Bridge is one of the 25 wards of the City of London, England. It is named for its location on the London Bridge, historically the only bridge across the River Thames in the immediate vicinity of the City.
The ward encompasses the area on and around the southern approach to London Bridge, extending from the river southwards. Its boundaries are roughly defined by Borough High Street to the south, with variations along side streets. Historically, the ward extended onto the bridge itself, including shops and dwellings that were built on the bridge's structure. These structures were removed during bridge reconstructions.
Bridge is a small ward in terms of both area and population. Its primary function is commercial, with businesses and offices dominating the landscape. The ward elects one Alderman and four Common Councilmen to the City of London Corporation.
The ward's history is closely tied to the London Bridge. Control of the bridge was strategically and economically important, as it controlled access to and from the City. The ward's administration reflects its historical significance and contemporary commercial activity. Major livery companies associated with Bridge ward include the Framework Knitters' Company and the Glovers' Company.
