The Beatnigs (album)

The Beatnigs is the self-titled and only studio album by the American industrial hip-hop group The Beatnigs. It was released in 1988 on Alternative Tentacles Records. The album is known for its aggressive blend of industrial noise, hip-hop beats, and politically charged lyrics, often touching on themes of social injustice, poverty, and police brutality. The group consisted of Michael Franti, Rono Tse, and Kevin "MC Kevvy Kev" Cadogan. The album features heavy use of samples, found sounds, and unconventional instrumentation. The lyrical content drew heavily from Franti's spoken word poetry and activist leanings. The Beatnigs received critical acclaim for its innovative sound and provocative message, but also garnered controversy due to its radical political views and confrontational style. Following the release of the album, The Beatnigs disbanded and Franti went on to form Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy and later, Michael Franti & Spearhead.
