Eben Alexander (educator)

Eben Alexander III (born December 11, 1953) is an American neurosurgeon and author who garnered significant public attention following the publication of his book, Proof of Heaven: A Neurosurgeon's Journey into the Afterlife (2012). While Alexander had a long and established career as an academic neurosurgeon, primarily at Harvard Medical School and other affiliated hospitals, his book detailing an alleged near-death experience (NDE) and subsequent claims about the nature of consciousness and the afterlife have been met with considerable skepticism and criticism from the scientific and medical community.

Prior to his foray into the realm of NDEs and spirituality, Alexander's professional life was dedicated to the field of neurosurgery. He specialized in minimally invasive surgery and focused on treating conditions affecting the brain and spinal cord. He held positions at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Massachusetts General Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, where he taught neurosurgery and contributed to research.

After a severe illness in 2008, during which he was in a coma, Alexander reported having a profound NDE. This experience formed the basis of Proof of Heaven, in which he describes his journey through what he interpreted as a realm of consciousness beyond the physical world. He claims to have encountered spiritual beings and received profound insights.

Neuroscientists and medical professionals have questioned the physiological plausibility of his account, citing potential explanations for his experience based on the known effects of coma, medication, and brain activity during recovery.
