The Bags (Massachusetts band)
The Bags were a punk rock band from Boston, Massachusetts, active in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They are considered a significant part of the city's early punk scene, known for their raw energy and often confrontational performances. The band's lineup included Patricia "Pat" Bag (vocals), Jon Mastro (guitar), and various bassists and drummers throughout their existence, including Billy Ruane on drums briefly.
The Bags' sound was characterized by its aggressive, minimalist approach, often incorporating dissonant guitar riffs and Pat Bag's distinctive, sometimes screamed vocals. Their lyrics frequently addressed themes of alienation, urban decay, and social commentary.
While The Bags never released a full-length album during their initial run, they recorded several singles and appeared on various compilation albums that documented the Boston punk scene of the time. These recordings have become highly sought after by collectors of punk music.
The band's live performances were a key part of their identity. They were regulars at Boston venues such as The Rat and played alongside other prominent punk bands of the era.
In recent years, there has been renewed interest in The Bags' music. Their recordings have been reissued, and the band's legacy as pioneers of the Boston punk scene has been re-evaluated. Though short-lived, The Bags left a lasting impact on the development of punk rock in Massachusetts.
