Castle Rock (Michigan)

Castle Rock is a prominent geological formation and roadside attraction located north of St. Ignace in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Rising approximately 195 feet above the surrounding landscape, it offers panoramic views of Lake Huron, Mackinac Island, and the surrounding woodlands.

The rock formation is composed primarily of dolomite, a sedimentary rock similar to limestone. Over time, weathering and erosion have shaped it into its distinctive castle-like appearance. Visitors can ascend a staircase to the summit to enjoy the views.

Castle Rock has a long history as a local landmark and point of interest. In the early 20th century, it was developed as a tourist attraction, with the addition of the staircase and viewing platform. It has since become a popular stop for travelers along Interstate 75 and those visiting the Mackinac area.

The attraction also features a statue of Paul Bunyan and his blue ox, Babe, adding to its roadside appeal. Souvenir shops and other amenities are located at the base of the rock. Castle Rock is privately owned and operated, and a small admission fee is charged to climb to the top.
