Clogmia

Clogmia are small flies belonging to the family Psychodidae, often referred to as drain flies, moth flies, or filter flies. These insects are known for their fuzzy appearance and their tendency to be found near drains and damp areas.

  • Appearance: Clogmia adults are characterized by their small size (typically 1.5 to 5 mm long), grayish-brown color, and hairy bodies and wings, giving them a moth-like appearance. Their wings are held roof-like over their bodies when at rest.

  • Habitat: Clogmia larvae thrive in stagnant water and decaying organic matter. Common breeding grounds include drains, sewers, septic tanks, and damp areas around sinks, showers, and toilets. The adults are often seen resting on walls and ceilings near these breeding sites.

  • Life Cycle: The life cycle of Clogmia consists of four stages: egg, larva, pupa, and adult. Females lay eggs in masses on the surface of stagnant water or moist organic debris. The larvae feed on decaying organic matter. The pupal stage is also aquatic and relatively short. The entire life cycle can be completed in a week to a month, depending on environmental conditions.

  • Impact on Humans: Clogmia are generally considered a nuisance pest. They do not bite or transmit diseases. However, their presence can be unsanitary and annoying, especially in food preparation areas. In rare cases, they can cause pulmonary myiasis or allergic reactions in susceptible individuals.

  • Control Measures: Effective control of Clogmia involves eliminating their breeding sites. This can be achieved by cleaning drains and pipes thoroughly to remove accumulated organic matter. Insecticides may be used as a supplementary measure, but are less effective if the breeding sites are not addressed. Regular flushing of drains with boiling water or enzymatic drain cleaners can also help to prevent infestations.
