Tambo Island
Tambo Island is a small island located in Bancroft Bay within Lake King, which is part of the Gippsland Lakes system in eastern Victoria, Australia. It is situated near the town of Metung.
The island is predominantly low-lying and largely covered by native vegetation, including various species of eucalypts and associated understory. It provides habitat for a variety of wildlife, including birds, reptiles, and small mammals.
Tambo Island is accessible by boat, and is a popular destination for recreational activities such as fishing, boating, and kayaking. There are walking tracks on the island which allow visitors to explore its natural environment. It is largely undeveloped, retaining a relatively pristine character.
Ownership of Tambo Island is a combination of public and private land. Some sections are managed as part of the Gippsland Lakes Coastal Park, protecting its ecological values. Private residences and holiday accommodation are also present on certain portions of the island.
The island's name is derived from the nearby Tambo River. The Gippsland Lakes, including the area surrounding Tambo Island, are an important ecological and tourist area. The area is subject to ongoing conservation efforts to protect its biodiversity and natural beauty.
