George Washington Carver High School (Bunnell, Florida)

George Washington Carver High School was a segregated high school for African American students located in Bunnell, Florida. It served students in Flagler County from the late 1940s until its closure in 1969, following the desegregation of Flagler County schools. Prior to its establishment, African American students in Flagler County either did not attend high school or had to travel outside the county to receive secondary education. The school was named in honor of George Washington Carver, the prominent African American agricultural scientist and inventor. While its resources were significantly less than the county's white schools, George Washington Carver High School played a vital role in providing educational opportunities and fostering a sense of community pride for Black students in the region. Following desegregation, the building was repurposed for other educational uses.
