Hotel Metropole (Santa Cruz, California)

The Hotel Metropole was a grand, multi-story hotel that stood in Santa Cruz, California from the late 19th century until it was destroyed by fire in 1898. Located near the beach and the Santa Cruz wharf, it catered to tourists attracted to the area's natural beauty and burgeoning resort town atmosphere.

Built by Elihu Anthony, a prominent Santa Cruz businessman, the Metropole quickly became known for its luxurious accommodations, elegant dining room, and extensive verandas that offered panoramic views of the Monterey Bay. It was one of the largest and most opulent hotels on the California coast at the time.

The hotel played a significant role in Santa Cruz's social scene, hosting dances, banquets, and other social gatherings. Prominent guests and visitors frequently stayed at the Metropole, solidifying its reputation as a premier destination.

On the evening of May 25, 1898, a devastating fire broke out in the hotel's kitchen. Fueled by the building's wooden structure and strong winds, the fire quickly engulfed the entire hotel. Despite efforts by local firefighters, the Hotel Metropole was completely destroyed. The loss of the Metropole was a significant blow to Santa Cruz, both economically and symbolically. It represented the end of an era of grand hotels and contributed to a shift in the city's tourism landscape.

Following the fire, the site remained vacant for some time. Eventually, other structures were built on or near the former location of the Hotel Metropole. While the original hotel is no longer standing, its legacy as a symbol of Santa Cruz's golden age endures in local history and historical accounts.
