Robert E. Johnson (editor)

Robert E. Johnson was an African American editor and journalist best known for his long tenure at Jet magazine. He served as editor of Jet from 1972 to 1996, shaping the magazine's coverage of African American life, culture, and politics during a pivotal period. Under his leadership, Jet maintained its focus on delivering news and information directly relevant to the Black community, often overlooked or misrepresented by mainstream media. He oversaw coverage of the Civil Rights Movement's aftermath, the rise of Black political power, and key cultural trends. Johnson was instrumental in solidifying Jet's position as a trusted and vital source of news and information for African Americans nationwide. After his editorship at Jet, he served as a contributing editor for Ebony magazine, also published by Johnson Publishing Company. He passed away in 2000.
