A120 road
The A120 is a major road in England, connecting the east of the country with London and the national motorway network. It runs primarily in an east-west direction across Essex and Hertfordshire.
Route:
The A120's western end begins at the A10 near Puckeridge in Hertfordshire. From there, it proceeds eastward, passing near Bishop's Stortford (where it has a junction with the M11 motorway) and Stansted Airport. Continuing eastward, the road traverses Essex, going past Braintree and Colchester. Its eastern terminus is at the A133 near Colchester.
Significance:
The A120 serves as an important link for freight and passenger traffic in East Anglia. It connects key economic hubs such as Stansted Airport and the ports near Colchester with the rest of the UK. It also provides access to numerous towns and villages along its route.
History and Upgrades:
The A120 has undergone several upgrades over the years, including dualling sections of the road to improve traffic flow. However, sections remain single carriageway, and these are often subject to congestion. Proposals for further improvements, including complete dualling of the route, have been discussed for many years, with varying degrees of progress. The need for upgrades arises from increased traffic volume and the desire to improve safety.
