Caterpillar (2010 film)

Caterpillar, also known as Kyatapirā, is a 2010 Japanese anti-war film directed by Koji Wakamatsu. It stars Shinobu Terajima and Keigo Kasuya. The film is set during and after the Second Sino-Japanese War and focuses on a soldier who returns home as a quadruple amputee, a living war hero.

The film explores themes of pacifism, nationalism, the dehumanizing effects of war, and the relationship between the disabled veteran and his wife, who is tasked with caring for him. It gained significant attention for its graphic and unflinching portrayal of the soldier's condition and the psychological impact on both him and his caregiver.

Caterpillar premiered at the 60th Berlin International Film Festival where Shinobu Terajima won the Silver Bear for Best Actress for her performance. The film sparked considerable debate and controversy due to its explicit content and critical stance on war.
