Tōrere
Tōrere is a traditional Māori game of strategy for two players. It is played on a board consisting of a central space (pūtahi) and radiating spaces around the perimeter. The number of perimeter spaces varies, but a common arrangement has eight. Each player has four pieces, and the objective of the game is to block the opponent's pieces so they cannot move.
Movement is restricted; pieces can only move to an adjacent empty space. However, pieces can move to the pūtahi from any perimeter space, and from the pūtahi to any perimeter space. A player loses if they have no legal moves. The strategy involves skillful maneuvering to control the board and restrict the opponent's options. Tōrere is more than just a game; it holds cultural significance, representing strategic thinking and problem-solving skills within Māori traditions.
