Chris Elliott (food scientist)

Chris Elliott, CBE, is a Professor of Food Safety and founder of the Institute for Global Food Security at Queen's University Belfast. His research focuses on detecting, controlling, and preventing food fraud and ensuring the integrity of food supply chains.

Elliott gained prominence for his investigation into the 2013 horsemeat scandal in Europe, leading the independent review commissioned by the UK government. His report, "Elliott Review into the Integrity and Assurance of Food Supply Networks," provided recommendations for improving food safety and combating food crime. The review highlighted the complexity of modern food supply chains and the vulnerabilities they present for fraudulent activities.

Beyond the horsemeat scandal, Elliott's work encompasses a wide range of food safety issues, including mycotoxins, veterinary drug residues, and other contaminants in food. He advocates for a holistic approach to food safety, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between government, industry, and academia. He is a frequent commentator on food safety matters in the media and advises various international organizations on food security and integrity. He received a CBE (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) for services to the agri-food industry.
