Sunny Boy (mascot)
Sunny Boy was a mascot used to promote a brand of creamed wheat cereal manufactured by the Manitoba-based milling company, Manitoba Pool Elevators (later known as Manitoba Pool or simply, The Pool). The mascot, a young boy with a cheerful disposition, was featured prominently on the cereal boxes and in advertising campaigns.
Sunny Boy cereal, a hot breakfast cereal made from coarsely ground wheat, was particularly popular in Western Canada. The mascot’s image was often associated with healthy eating and the wholesome goodness of prairie-grown wheat. The branding emphasized the connection to Canadian agriculture and family values.
The Sunny Boy mascot and cereal brand enjoyed considerable longevity. While the cereal is no longer widely available, the image of the Sunny Boy mascot remains a recognizable symbol of prairie heritage and Canadian food history for many people who grew up in Western Canada. The character is often remembered fondly as a nostalgic symbol of childhood breakfasts. The Manitoba Pool Elevators were eventually absorbed into other companies, which contributed to the eventual disappearance of the Sunny Boy brand.
