Karpasia (town)

Karpasia (Greek: Καρπασία, Turkish: Karpaz) is a town located on the Karpas Peninsula in the northeastern part of Cyprus. It is geographically situated within the internationally recognized territory of the Republic of Cyprus, although it has been under Turkish Cypriot control since the Turkish invasion of 1974.

Karpasia is a historically significant area, known for its natural beauty, including long stretches of sandy beaches and relatively unspoiled landscapes. It is also home to the Apostolos Andreas Monastery, an important religious site for both Greek and Turkish Cypriots.

Prior to 1974, Karpasia was predominantly inhabited by Greek Cypriots. Following the division of the island, many Greek Cypriots were displaced, and Turkish Cypriots from other areas were resettled in the region. Today, Karpasia has a mixed population, with a significant presence of Turkish Cypriots alongside a smaller number of Greek Cypriots who remained in the area.

Economically, Karpasia relies primarily on agriculture, particularly the cultivation of olives, carob, and grain, as well as tourism, attracted by its natural environment and cultural heritage. The town is relatively isolated compared to other parts of Cyprus, which has contributed to the preservation of its traditional character. The Karpas Peninsula, including Karpasia, is also known for its wild donkeys, which are a protected species.
